Minnows make noise at PanCon 24

As the Pan Continental Championship A Division squads did battle before television and streaming cameras, the B Division hosted men’s and women’s squads determined to make their mark on curling’s future.

In the women’s division, Australia’s Helen Williams beat Philippines’ Kathleen Dubberstein 11-6 in one semifinal to progress to the gold medal game, while Jamaica’s madeleine Spurgeon scored a 9-8 victory over Kazakhstan’s Tilsimay Alliyarova to face them in the final.

Australia went on to win the gold, 11-4 over Jamaica, to qualify for next year’s A Division.

Kazakhstan defeated Philippines for women’s bronze.

In the men’s B-Division semi-finals, Kazakhstan’s Abylaikhan Zhuzbay beat Jamaica’s Ian Robertson 10-3, while Marc Pfister’s Philippines were 6-1 winners over Jason Chang of Hong Kong.

Philippines went on to defeat Kazakhstan 9-3 for men’s gold, and Pfister’s former Swiss champions will now compete in next season’s A Division.

Hong Kong won another men’s bronze medal by defeating Jamaica.

In the men’s round-robin, Philippines went 10-0 with Jamaica and Kazakhstan at 8-2 and Hong Kong and India both at 7-3.

Brazil finished 4-6; Puerto Rico, Qatar and Saudi Arabia tied at 3-7; Nigeria finished 2-8 and Kenya finished at 0-10.

In women’s round-robin play, Australia and Kazakhstan both finished at 6-1, with Jamaica and Philippines both at 5-2.

Brazil finished 3-4, Hong Kong at 2-5, Nigeria at 1-6 and Kenya at 0-7.
