There’s a Canadian curling TV show on the horizon.
A casting call has gone out in Winnipeg for paid, non-union speaking roles for the upcoming comedy series Cool Sweepings, produced by Manitoba Black Film Space.
“We’re looking for fresh talent to bring our new comedy-drama series to life,” the company told The Curling News. “Cool Sweepings follows four friends chasing wild dreams, hustles, and unexpected glory on the curling rink. Filming in Manitoba, and there will be some curling training for all curling roles if needed.”
Early plans call for the show to air on Bell Fibe TV1. Last month, development started with a media launch at the Fort Rouge Curling Club in Winnipeg.
“If you fit one of these roles and are ready to be part of a hilarious, heart-filled story about friendship, hustle, and curling, we want to hear from you!” said MBFS.
Fort Rouge has opened its doors to big cameras on multiple occasions. The last time something of this scale was developed at “The Fort” took place in 2010, when a single season of the film adaptation of Men With Brooms (2002) was shot for CBC-TV.
The Cool Sweepings show synopsis reads: “In a last-ditch effort to get out of major debt, four young Jamaican Canadian friends start a curling team, in hopes of winning the grand prize of $200,000 at the Safeway Select Championship.
“However, they will have much to learn about the game, themselves and working as a team in a white-dominated sport before they can even think about winning.”
(Kudos from us, folks, on the Select reference! Although Safeway has been supplanted by Viterra as the Manitoba men’s fours championship sponsor, the Select reference will stir something in many a ’Toba curling fan.)
