Canada defeats game USA for bronze

Canada’s Rachel Homan fulfilled a long-awaited destiny by winning the Olympic bronze medal at Cortina Olympic Curling Stadium.

The Canadians defeated a game Tabitha Peterson squad from the United States by a 10-7 count, after Peterson ticked a guard with her final throw on a last-chance steal attempt.

Canada was up 8-7 at the time, after the Americans grabbed a deuce in the ninth end.

The game was well-played by both sides, and it was the full package from Homan’s team.

Homan, Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes picked themselves up off the canvas multiple times, from an 0-3 streak to start the competition to a forced regroup following a disappointing performance in the semifinals.

“We wanted to fight hard for a medal and that's what we did today. And we’re so unbelievably proud of it,” said Homan.

“It’s the weight of wearing that maple leaf and representing Canada with as much tenacity and pride as we can. We never want to let up, and we showed that this week.

“We were kind of in single elimination for what felt like the entire week. And you know, we just kept staying in the process and staying in the moment.

“There’s not enough words to describe how proud I am of this team, how hard we fought for each other and for Canada.”

It was an impressive show from the U.S. women, after failed outings at PyeongChang 2018 and Beijing 2022, plus player rotations due to family planning in the run up to this 2025-26 season.

Tara and Tabitha Peterson, with Cory Thiesse and Taylor Anderson-Heide, can be proud of a fourth-place finish that many curling observers didn’t believe was possible.

“The journey to get here is never easy,” said Tabitha Peterson. “So that in itself is a feat, going through the Olympic qualification event and then making the playoffs for the first time as a group.

“So, (I’m) really, really proud of the hard work we put in the last year to get to this point. And unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be, today.”

Cory Thiesse won Olympic silver in mixed doubles to start the lengthy curling tournament, which ends tomorrow ((Feb. 22) after 18 days of competition.

“I’m just so lucky to be out there with so many amazing teammates, and we made history multiple times this month, which is incredible,” said Thiesse.

“It’s incredible for USA curling, and you just hope to keep this going.”
