The Pants are back.
Norway’s Olympic men’s team skipped by Magnus Ramsfjell – the son of a legend, Eigil Ramsfjell – paid homage to the legacy of another curling legend at the Cortina Olympic Curling Stadium today.
Anil Mungal-The Curling NewsFor the first time during these Games, and possibly the only time, the third-place Norwegians (4-2) are wearing glaringly loud(mouth) pants during the competition.
The Curling News heard this was coming, and our image specialist Anil Mungal was ready as the team came out for Tuesday evening’s pre-game practice session.
Hey! How did you know? • Anil Mungal-The Curling NewsThomas Ulsrud brought out “The Pants” almost exactly 16 years ago – 16 years ago and one day, in fact – at Vancouver 2010, and his team’s curling star went on to shine thorough the decade and beyond.
Team Ulsrud competed in the next two editions of the Olympic Winter Games in 2014 and 2018, losing a tiebreaker at Sochi, and scored a world championship gold medal in 2014. Their team split up in 2019.
Prior to Beijing 2022, the Ramsfjell boys teased us by training in The Pants, but they didn’t bring them to the Olympics.
Just over three months later, Ulsrud died of cancer.
Practice stones • Anil Mungal-The Curling NewsNow the lads are paying tribute to the Ulsrud legacy in beautiful colours that, for many fans, only add to the splendour of the visuals on display in gorgeous Cortina.
We wonder if the choice to unveil The Pants today, in the second game of their day, has something to do with the opponents.
Niklas Edin’s crew were close to the Ulsrud gang, with the two skips becoming good friends.
The two even appeared together for an underwear commercial.
The Balls were ComfyObviously, many questions will be asked in the mixed zone, with the answers to come.
