Grand Slam of Curling rightsholder Sportsnet has made programming changes to today’s Canadian playoff coverage.
Two days ago, The Curling News revealed that Canadian curling fans – thanks to the Toronto Blue Jays playoff run – would be watching some Thursday and Friday Grand Slam games approximately eight hours after they started.
Despite an MLB off day on Saturday, the Sportsnet schedule showed an even worse preempt for the Slam men’s quarterfinals and men’s and women’s semifinals, thanks to multiple NHL hockey game coverage and the network’s packaged “loop” shows.
That Sportsnet schedule has now changed for today. The news came late last night from Nisku, Alta. – as the sun was rising in Newfoundland & Labrador – at the end of the Brad Gushue versus Matt Dunstone match.

Sportsnet One will now cover the second and third playoff draws live – in Around The Rings style – beginning at 4:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. ET) and then at 8:00 p.m. MT (10:00 p.m. ET).
Sportsnet has a total of seven linear channels available to subscribers, along with the Sportsnet+ streaming channel – which, to be fair, was carrying the Thursday and Friday games live all along.
There also appeared to be a deal struck between Sportsnet and The Curling Group with regard to the latter’s Rock Channel. The Thursday and Friday afternoon/evening draws weren’t geo-blocked in Canada after all; domestic fans could have watched Gushue defeat Dunstone live online, with commentary provided by Peter Steski, Brent Laing and Team Jacobs lead Ben Hebert (draw 16, available for replay here).
Speaking of Team Gushue, they’re now battling Team McEwen in a Saturday morning tiebreaker – also on Rock Channel – in an attempt to qualify for their first Grand Slam playoff weekend in their last four attempts.
Sunday’s championship finals will air at 12 noon (women’s) and 4:30 p.m. ET (men’s).
