McEwen back on ice in Regina

Dawn McEwen, the all-star lead for many years of women’s squads skipped by Jennifer Jones, will be back on the curling ice next month.

And that’s for the second time in a month.

McEwen, who retired at the end of the 2022 curling season, will throw lead stones for Kerri Einarson’s Manitoba team at the last Grand Slam series event of the season, the Champions Cup held at Regina May 2-7.

McEwen will replace regular lead Briane Harris, who competed at the recent world women’s championships and the Players’ Championship Grand Slam late in her pregnancy.

McEwen competed in her first event since retirement earlier this month.

She laced up the curling boots and made a drive with husband Mike McEwen to compete at a mixed doubles event in Morris, Man.

McEwen and Team Einarson start the Champions Cup at 6:30 p.m. on May 2 against former Nova Scotia competitor Isabelle Ladouceur and her young Ontario squad.

Two other round robin games are good Team Einarson candidates for Sportsnet feature television coverage, which kicks into gear on May 4. That night, Einarson takes on provincial rival—and former McEwen teammate—Kaitlyn Lawes (8:00 p.m. CST) before battling Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa on May 5 (12:00 p.m. CST).

McEwen’s longtime front end partner Jill Officer made her return to the curling ice back in January, sparing for Team Lawes at the Manitoba provincial championship.
