Scottish Curling has another decision to make

Scottish Curling images by Les Snowdon - Whyte Beats Mouat: Here We Go Again

Ross Whyte has triumphed at the Scottish Men’s Championship for the second year running—and he’s still not expected to compete at the world championship.

It’s a similar predicament, or so it seems, for repeat women’s champion Fay Henderson, who walloped Rebecca Morrison by a 10-2 count.

The Whyte foursome took out top-seeded Bruce Mouat 8-3 in nine ends of the championship final at Dumfries.

The final was locked 1-1 until the sixth end, when Mouat cracked a deuce to go up 3-1.

But that was it, as Whyte took a three, stole two and then a final deuce for the inflated final score.

Mouat and Whyte had both gone 7-1 heading into the playoffs, with Mouat besting Whyte 9-8 in an extra end in the final round robin match.

James Craik (6-2) and Orrin Carson (4-4) were the semifinalists.

One year ago, Whyte triumphed over Craik in the final while Mouat finished third, and the women’s final saw Fay Henderson defeat Rebecca Morrison.

Ten days later, Scottish Curling ruled that Mouat and Morrison would wear the tartan at the world championships which, despite existing team selection criteria, caused an uproar in Scotland.

Despite the second straight win for Whyte—he also scored his team’s first Grand Slam title in December—Team Mouat has simply torn it up this season, winning multiple competitions including the first three Slams of the season.

Whyte was backed by Robin Brydone, Duncan McFadzean and Euan Kyle.

Henderson, with Robyn Munro, Hailey Duff and Katie McMillan, went 5-0 in women’s pre-playoff matches while Morrison finished 4-1.

Morrison defeated Laura Watt 7-5 in the semifinal.
