The squad grew frustrated with changing playing conditions
Canada will miss the playoffs at the Olympic mixed doubles curling event after a fourth and fifth consecutive loss on Sunday.
Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant lost to Sweden (7-6 score) and South Korea (9-5) to cap a frustrating weekend at the Cortina Olympic Curling Stadium.
Despite a final Monday morning game against Switzerland (4-3 won/loss record), the team’s 3-5 mark leaves no chance for the pair to advance to Monday night’s semifinal round.
USA is rolling • Issei Kato/Reuters-Imagn ImagesAlso on Sunday night, Great Britain – owners of the first playoff spot – overcame host Italy 9-6 to move to 8-1. Italy (5-3), the defending Olympic champions, have dropped to third place behind USA (6-2) who were 8-7 victors over Sweden (5-4).
The Canadians looked solid out of the gate by scoring three straight wins, but grew frustrated with changing playing conditions.
“It’s like taking a Honda Civic for a drive down the highway and then jumping into a Ferrari,” said Gallant on Saturday. “It’s just going to ride a little different.”
Following the morning loss to Sweden, Peterman said she and her husband had tried to adjust their deliveries to try and compensate for the playing conditions.
The highlight match of Monday morning’s final round robin draw will be Italy versus United States (3:55 a.m. EST)
