NL curling legend heads back to Manitoba

The final major shoe in Canadian men’s curling has dropped with confirmation that Mark Nichols is joining Brier champion Matt Dunstone’s team.

Nichols is one of Canada’s most decorated competitors following decades with Brad Gushue. As the trusty third to the now-retired Gushue, Nichols shares in all of Gushue’s Brier, Grand Slam, Olympic and world championship accomplishments.

“We’re incredibly excited to welcome Mark to the team,” said Team Dunstone, which captured the St. John’s Brier in March and scored world silver in early April.

“He’s one of the most accomplished and respected players in the game, and his experience, shotmaking, and competitive mindset are a perfect fit for what we’re building.

“As we set our sights on defending our Brier title and earning our way back to the World Championships, we believe Mark will be a huge part of helping us get there.”

This won’t be Nichols’ first curling rodeo out of Manitoba, nor will it be his first time playing on the front end.

Nichols competed with bison curling legend Jeff Stoughton from 2013–2015, appearing in the 2013 and 2014 Briers.

Nichols will throw second stones behind Matt Dunstone, third Colton Lott and lead Ryan Harnden.

Nichols replaces Harnden’s brother E.J., who announced his retirement prior to the team’s Brier-winning run.

“After a very rewarding journey with Team Gushue, starting this new chapter with Team Dunstone feels like the perfect next step,” said Nichols.

“The opportunity to join forces with Matt, Colton, and Ryan was one I couldn’t pass up. I’m energized by the opportunity to bring my experience to an already elite lineup, and I look forward to building on the foundation they’ve established as we pursue our goals on the world stage.”

Ex-Gushue and Nichols teammates Brendan Bottcher and Geoff Walker earlier announced their new team, which sees Bottcher return to the tee at skip position.
