Third straight Games, third straight medal performance
In the end, it was a simple open takeout.
Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg threw the final stone of the 2026 Olympic Games curling competition and Sweden defeated Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni 6-5 to capture the women’s team gold medal.
Eric Bolte-Imagn ImagesIt was a third straight Olympic medal performance for the Swedish team after winning gold at PyeongChang 2018 and bronze four years ago in Beijing.
The foursome, which called a timeout before their final throw, have also captured two silver medals at the world championship and three European championship crowns.
Hasselborg and second Agnes Knochenhauer have been teammates for decades, first winning the world junior championship in 2010.
Sara McManus and Sofia Scharback signed on in 2015.
Anna and Agnes also share a birthday • Eric Bolte-Imagn ImagesSilver is the first Olympic medal scored by Tirinzoni and fourth thrower Alina Paetz in three attempts, and after a distinguished career that includes four straight world titles between 2019 and 2023.
Paetz has an additional two world championship golds, as a skip in 2012 and 2015.
Sweden, starting with hammer, scored a deuce and held Switzerland to a single point in the fourth end.
The Swiss tied the score with a pair in the sixth, but after a Swedish single the 2018 champions stole the eighth end when Paetz missed a critical double.
Eric Bolte-Imagn ImagesThe 5-3 lead essentially salted the game away. Tirinzoni and Co. did grab another deuce in the very next end to tie the score, but Hasselborg’s crew threw perfect takeouts to remove house and front-house danger.
A slightly off-kilter freeze attempt from Paetz was easily blasted out of play on the final throw of these Winter Olympic Games.
Both teams tied with 83% shooting accuracy, with the Swiss takeouts (74%) falling short of their draw prowess (90%).
Sweden finished the competition at 9-2 and Switzerland 7-4 after both teams scored superb semifinal victories over bronze medallists Canada (7-4) and USA (6-5).
