One of curling’s top thirds has shifted west for 2026-27

Val Sweeting, the decorated third and former skip, has shifted west of her home province of Alberta.

Less than two weeks after her departure from Team Kerri Einarson – with whom she won five Canadian women’s championships and eight Grand Slam titles – the 38-year-old will play third with Kayla MacMillan’s revamped Victoria, B.C. foursome.

MacMillan lost the best-of-three championship series at the Canadian Olympic Pre-Trials to Edmonton’s Selena Sturmay back in November, and also lost the 2026 B.C. women’s championship final to Corryn Brown in January.

The squad had captured the 2023 and ’24 B.C. STOH crowns under former skip Clancy Grandy.

The front end is made up of Lindsay Dubue and Lauren Lenentine.

MacMillan announced the departure of Brittany Tran and Sarah Loken last week.

Before joining Einrason – in an amalgamation of four skips in the spring of 2018 – Sweeting skipped Alberta at three STOH championships, losing the final in both 2014 and 2015.
